Furthering the aims of the University: To promote interest in the life, activities and progress of the University and generally to further the aims, objects and interests of the University

Representation: To represent and advocate on behalf of students in an effective and accountable manner, working together with any other appropriate organisation

Services:

  • In conjunction with the University, to provide facilities, programs and services to enhance the education and university experience of students
  • To provide opportunities for the interaction and personal development of students
  • To provide charitable assistance to individual students to encourage the participation of those students in the activities of the University

To be independent: of religious or political organisations and affiliations to those organisations

Governance

The Student Association is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of 12 Board Directors. Nine Board Directors are students who possess Ordinary membership as defined above and have been elected by the Ordinary members. The remaining three Board Director positions are appointed - the CQU Council's nominee; the Vice Chancellor's nominee; and a person appointed by the Board for expertise.

The Board of Directors meets on at least a bi-monthly basis to review Association operations and to formulate Student Association policies. The Student Association has established Committees to advise the Board on finance and development matters, to gain feedback from student members, to plan and organise student publications and to implement and evaluate club, sports and recreation activities. The Student Association also represents students on CQU Committees. This function is important as many of the academic procedures, which students have to abide by, are decided at these meetings.

When vacancies occur on the Board between elections, the vacant Board positions may be filled by the ‘Casual Vacancy Process'. Applications are called for the vacant positions which are advertised (refer Student Involvement).

When nominations are called for the ‘Election for the Board of Directors' only a CQUSA Ordinary member may nominate for a vacant Board Director position (in the same enrolment category as their own). Similarly only CQUSA Ordinary members are entitled to vote and may only vote for the Board Director candidate who will represent their enrolment category.

The Student Association has established student-based Campus Student Committees comprised of Ordinary Members who assist in the promotion of the student representation and advocacy services of the organisation; act as localised Student Representatives in matters of concern to students; and to make recommendations to the CQUSA Board of Directors.

The Student Association also speaks on student's behalf on various CQU Committees to ensure that student's views, rights and interests are adequately represented at these committees.

Localities and Diversity

The CQU Student Association provides dedicated Academic Advocacy and Support Services and Representation for 24,000 students across a broad geographical base of ten teaching localities. These campuses are spread from Melbourne to Mackay, with a large proportion of students studying by Distance Education. Dynamic growth over the last five years has resulted in the Student Association developing specific services for International Students who collectively now represent 50% of the total CQU student population.

Membership Benefits

The CQU Student Association is nationally recognised as the innovative leader in the provision of representation and services for the benefit of members.

The Student Association actively participates in all key decision making committees of the University to ensure that the views and needs of students are a formal consideration in the creation of academic programs and initiatives of CQU. In addition the Student Association maintains a committee structure encompassing all campuses and modes of study as a means to gather the views of students and identify significant issues.

Committees also recognise and recommend service development opportunities and conduct activities for the diverse and dispersed CQU student population. The Student Association places key staff members on all campuses to assist with academic and non academic service provision. In addition there are also dedicated Postgraduate and Distance Education services and support.

The CQU Student Association ensures flexible service delivery to a diverse and dispersed student population through the incorporation of online services such as the provision of:

Ordinary Membership

An essential part of protecting your rights as a student comes from being a member of the CQU Student Association.

The CQU Student Association is a voluntary membership organisation to which enrolled students
of the Central Queensland University are entitled to membership. Membership to the CQU Student Association is now voluntary and free.

Students are no longer charged a compulsory services fee since the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) legislation on the 1st of July 2006.

All currently enrolled students that voluntarily sign up as an Ordinary Member of the CQUSA not only receive access to all CQUSA Member Services but can also participate in the governing of the CQUSA.

The more members that CQUSA have, the more effectively they can represent you. Become a member and empower your Student Association to help you and your fellow students in your current and future academic goals. Together we can make a difference.

Challenge and Innovation

The CQU Student Association has established itself as a dynamic and visionary organisation dedicated to furthering support to, and the interests of, the diverse and dispersed CQU student population. No other student organisation in Australia operates across as many geographically dispersed campuses, nor have the challenging composition of members. The CQU Student Association provides representation, services and support in circumstances where at least half the student population is International students, where the majority of domestic students study via Distance Education, and where the majority of students are of mature age.

The challenging environment in which the Student Association operates ensures innovative practices. The StudentAssociation is characterised by its focus on producing outcomes via best practices in governance, representation and management. The Student Association not only benchmarks best practices against its industry but also in open competition with the business sector.
