CQUSA External Support Services

You are probably aware that many courses offered at CQU are available through Distance Education (External), but you may be surprised to learn that more than one third of CQU students study in this mode. The CQU Student Association represents all CQU students and provides a number of campus and online support services for external students regardless of location.

Membership

Joining the CQU Student Association for FREE gives students access to many services that add value to your University experience. The CQUSA Academic Advocacy and Support services are free for all students however only CQUSA Ordinary Members will have access to services such as the CQUSA Membership Card and Booklet, national and local discounts, vouchers, competitions, giveaways and more.

Students can become a CQUSA Ordinary Member by completing the online membership form or at a CQU Student Association Office on campus. Once students have confirmed their membership via an email sent to their official CQU Email address they can collect their Membership Card and Booklet from a CQUSA Office to receive all the benefits being a member of the CQU Student Association provides.

Diary & Wall Planner

The CQUSA Student Diary is released each year during Orientation. If you are unable to attend the DE Orientations or visit a CQU Campus to collect your free diary, please email association-service@cqu.edu.au to request a diary to be mailed to your home address at no cost.

The CQU Student Diary is based on the CQU Academic Calendar which spans from March Term 1 to March Term 3 and contains a yearly planner, 2 years to a view, principal dates, term timetables, exam timetabls, assignment timetables, names and addresses, web sites, information about CQUSA Services and contacts, student discounts and notes pages.

University Sport

University Sport at CQU provides enrolled students with the opportunity to represent the University in a variety of regional, national and international sporting competitions. University Sport is a great way to become more involved in sport at CQU. It's all about taking a break from the stresses of uni, meeting new people and competing in a sport that you love. The CQU Student Association avidly supports student involvement in University Representative Sport and encourages CQU students to represent the university at tertiary level at the:

Gold Coast Challenge held from 6th to 9th July 2008 - Set in 'Australia's Playground' a number of events utilise the Gold Coast beaches and sporting venues along the Coast, thus, the event is sure to offer students a week of sun, surf, sport and plenty of socializing. With 11 Sports being contested; AUC - Surfing, Australian Rules Football, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Beach Touch, Netball, Hockey, Soccer, Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee and Water Polo 5's, the Challenge is sure to prove an exciting time for approximately 1000 university athletes.

Australian University Games held from 28th September to 3rd October 2008 - The Games held in Melbourne provide an opportunity for university athletes to compete against each other in a national multi sport event. As such, the Games has built a reputation as a not-to-be-missed event attracting over 6,000 participants from over 40 universities each year. With 28 sports being contested, participants will be able to compete in: Athletics, Australian Rules Football, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Fencing, Golf, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kendo, Lawn bowls, Netball, Rugby Union 7's, Soccer, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo.

Student Scholarships

The CQU Student Association (CQUSA) Student Scholarship Program offers financial support to currently enrolled students that are Ordinary Members of the CQUSA and are studying at the CQU Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, Emerald, Bundaberg Campuses or Externally.

A number of $1000 Student Scholarships are awarded annually and are designed to recognise and acknowledge students' leadership qualities and contributions made that have benefited CQU students or others in the local community, including: involvement in setting up/co-ordinating study groups, charitable organsiations or sporting bodies, offering tutorial services to remote students or frequently contributing to student media.

Students are required to address and meet the selection criteria to apply for a $1000 Scholarship. Nomination forms and information to assist in setting out of the criteria can be obtained from a CQU Student Association Office at a campus near.

Nominations open in August and close in October. Successful recipients of the CQUSA Scholarship Program will be notified in writing with a certificate of appreciation and the scholarship cheque in November.

Sport Scholarships

The CQU Student Association Sport Scholarships program offers financial support for student athletes and officials of the CQ region, while they are attending and representing CQU. The goals of this program are to help CQU students complete their University education while still competing and officiating in their chosen sport and to improve the quality of CQU's sporting profile and representation in club and inter-university sport.

A recommendation of a combination of full scholarships worth $1,000 each and half scholarships worth $500 each, not exceeding the scholarship budget, can be made. Special financial needs such as equipment costs, travel costs, or individual personal circumstances will be considered if identified in the application. Recommendations by coaches, sporting bodies and others who can give relevant comment on the abilities and potential of an applicant, will be considered if submitted with the application.

HALF SCHOLARSHIPS
• Achievement at a State Level.
• Achievement at an Age Group National Level.
• Achievement at Regional and/or National Level in University Sport.
• Potential to achieve at any of the above three levels.

FULL SCHOLARSHIPS
• Achievement at a National Level.
• Achievement at an International Level in University Sport.
• Potential to achieve at any of the above two levels.

Nominations open in August and close in October. Successful recipients of the CQUSA Schoalrship Program will be notified in writing with a certificate of appreciation and the scholarship cheque in November.

Student Newspaper


The CQU Student Association produces a student newspaper called 'The Pipeline', to keep students updated with what is happening on your Campus and around CQU with some fantastic features, including Reviews, Competitions and Fun Stuff which includes Eugene Cartoons by Linus Lane, Lovatt's Puzzels, Trivia and Recipes.

Accommodation

The Online Accommodation Referral Service is a free service, which enables students to search for accommodation to suit their specific needs. Working in conjunction with local real estate agents and local home owners, the online Accommodation Referral Service provides up-to-date information on available units, flats, houses and share accommodation options, which can be posted, by students and homeowners once registered within the system. It takes time to look around, so be prepared to spend a couple of days in your new town, perhaps in temporary accommodation, while you are looking for a place to settle.

CQUSA Staff also provide information and advice regarding other aspects of renting, that is, residential tenancy agreements, contracts, bond retrieval information, and tenancy rights and responsibilities.

Employment

The CQUSA provides a free Online Employment Referral Service that is easily accessed by employers and students alike to assist students in sourcing casual, part-time, vacation, volunteer and full-time employment opportunities. Wide ranges of vacancies are registered throughout the year, some positions are full-time, tutoring and graduate positions, but the great majority is of a casual/part-time nature to cater to the busy lifestyle and varied schedules experienced by students.

Secondhand Textbooks

The CQU Student Association facilitates an Online Secondhand Textbook Service for students to list and buy Secondhand Textbooks. Students wanting to purchase books can search through the items listed and view names and telephone numbers of anyone wanting to sell books. The two parties then negotiate the details of the purchase.

Learning Network QLD Centres

Learning Network Queensland Centres provide student support services to students in approx 40 locations throughout Queensland. They also have an LNQ Centre in Rockhampton for student access. The LNQ Centres provide:

Up to 24 hr access to centres
Study groups or quiet study
Information Technologies to link students with lecturers ie teleconferencing, audiographics, videoconferencing etc
Computers, internet, printers, scanners, photocopying, faxing etc
Exam supervision in locations throughout Queensland
Face to face computer training
